Bird-WatchingThis page is currently under construction. Head for Handa Island, the Scottish Wildlife Trust's reserve off the coast of Scourie.
Accessible by ferry from Tarbet (April to early September), Handa is home to one of the largest seabird colonies in north-western Europe. Every summer, its cliffs come alive with 200,000 breeding seabirds, including guillemots, razorbills, great skuas, kittiwakes, arctic skuas and puffins.
The Great Stack of Handa is particularly impressive. Its east face alone houses over 9,000 breeding guillemots. Apart from the birds, Handa has a poignant ruined village, whose inhabitants left in 1847.
Closer to home, grey herons nest on the rocky fringes of the estuary where the Rhiconich River flows into Loch Inchard, and goosanders, mergansers and eiders nest along the edge of the loch. These and other species can all be seen from the flat.
